There may be some last-minute changes to presentations and venues, so a final program will be available at registration. Looking Forward: Translating Challenges to Opportunities

The 2009 Nunavut Mining Symposium will be Looking Forward: Translating Challenges to Opportunities. Speakers and events include:

  • the Honourable Eva Aariak, Premier of Nunavut, who will speak to delegates during opening remarks on Tuesday, March 31
  • Patricia Mohr, Vice-President, Economics and Commodity Marketing Specialist, The Scotiabank Group, as our luncheon speaker on Tuesday, March 31
  • the Town Hall meeting at the Astro Theatre to hear participating expert panelists
  • Exploration updates will be provided by industry on Tuesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 2 at the Astro Theatre

Don’t forget the Canadian North Nunavut Mining Awards banquet on Thursday, April 2, with keynote speaker Rob Huebert from the University of Calgary. The banquet is jointly sponsored by Canadian North and Agnico-Eagle Mines.

Town Hall Panelist: Honourable Peter Taptuna

Honourable Peter Taptuna

Honourable Peter Taptuna, Minister of Economic Development & Transportation, will be participating as a panelist at this year’s Town Hall Meeting.

Prior to being elected to the third Nunavut Legislative Assembly, Minister Taptuna was a community leader in Kugluktuk. He graduated from Nunavut Arctic College with a diploma in Management. Minister Taptuna is a trained heavy duty mechanic, and was employed with Echo Bay Mines and spent many years in the oil and gas drilling industry, both onshore and off. Minister Taptuna worked for several years for the Kugluktuk HTO. He has served as a Hamlet Councillor and Deputy Mayor for the Hamlet of Kugluktuk, and has served as Director and Chair for the Kitikmeot Corporation, and as a Board Member for the Nunavut Development Corporation.

Minister Taptuna was elected to the Third Nunavut Legislative Assembly this past November and was chosen by his peers to sit in Cabinet. Premier Eva Aariak appointed him Minister of Economic Development & Transportation.
