2009 Nunavut Mining Symposium

The twelfth annual Nunavut Mining Symposium will be held in Iqaluit from March 31 – April 2, 2009. This theme of this year’s Symposium is Looking Forward: Translating Challenges to Opportunities, and will highlight the last ten years of Nunavut, as well as anticipating what the next decade will bring to the mining and exploration industry.

The Nunavut Mining Symposium attracts professionals from Inuit organizations, regulatory agencies, various levels of government, and exploration and mining companies. Events include conference sessions and workshops, a one-day trade show, hospitality suites, entertainment, and a gala dinner and awards evening to celebrate the mining and exploration industry in Nunavut.

Town Hall Panelist: Mike Vaydik

Mike Vaydik was born and raised in Yellowknife. He attended Notre Dame and Simon Fraser Universities in British Columbia, where he studied political science, history and economics. Summer employment in mining exploration gave him early experience in the vast bush and tundra of the NWT and Nunavut.

Rob HuebertRob Huebert is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary. He is also the associate director of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies. He is currently a senior research fellow of the Canadian International Council.
Dr. Huebert has also taught at Memorial University, Dalhousie University, and the University of Manitoba.

Victor TootooSince receiving his diploma in Business Administration from Algonquin Community College in Brandon, Manitoba, he has worked with Keewatin Tribal Council in Northern Manitoba, the Government of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, and the Government of Nunavut (GN).

In September 2005, Victor became the first Inuk in Canada to receive a professional accounting designation through the Certified General Accountants Association of Nunavut/NWT.
